Charl Smith, Paul Murison, and Grant Kaveney became good friends because of their shared love of fishing. Growing up in families who have all enjoyed the ocean for generations, fishing has always been a part of their lives.
All three want this endeavor to help the larger fishing community get involved in the sport while also actively promoting conservation and the importance of education in order to "fish for the future."
Paul Murison
Paul, a husband, father, and keen fisherman, has had a lifelong passion for fishing, which began when he was a child listening to fishing stories in his uncle's garage. As Keith Murison's nephew, he inherited a plethora of expertise and was lucky enough to gain knowledge on the family fishing secrets.
Over the years, he has fished various locations along the South African coast, from West Coast to the Eastern Cape. His enthusiasm for the sport has not waned, as he has recently begun to share his adventures with his 4-year-old son. These experiences have strengthened his belief for the need of fishing conservation for future generations.
Grant Kaveney
Grant, who grew up in Cape Town and now splits his time between the Cape and London, is an avid fisherman and company owner. He grew out of fishing and pursued other activities after learning the basic techniques of catching fish with his Grandfather at Milnerton lagoon and various harbor walls before the age of ten.
After taking a charter while on vacation in Thailand about a decade later, the desire was revived. He returned to the Cape right away, bought some gear, and set out to learn everything he could. The first few days back were difficult, but he managed to catch his first Galjoen in Gordon's Bay, followed by his first Belman and Kabeljou, and the rest is history.
Charl Smith
"My love for fishing started when I was a little boy fishing with my grandfather, dad and uncles on the Struisbaai plaat. Having two boys I also wanted to share my fishing experiences with them, as I was fortunate enough to learn from key role players in my family. Over the years we have learnt how important it is for conservation, this is what I want passed down to my family.
Over the last 25 years my passion for fishing has grown. Having a holiday house at Struisbaai, the whole area has become my playground and I know the area like the palm of my hand.
I would love to share this knowledge with the fishing community and hopefully enjoy what I've experienced over the last 25 years."
